Job Description

Job Overview:

The Repertory Company Director at Coronado School of the Arts is responsible for leading and managing the school's repertory company, guiding students in the preparation and performance of self written, directed, acted and produced production. The Director works closely with students, faculty, and technical staff to create high-quality theatrical performances that reflect the diverse talents of the student body. This role involves teaching theater skills, directing productions, managing all aspects of the Repertory Company, and fostering a supportive and creative environment where students can thrive.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Artistic Direction & Production Management :
    • Teach, support and inspire self produced productions (skits) throughout the school year, ensuring a diverse and inclusive repertoire.
    • Collaborate with the school's theater faculty and administration to align productions with educational goals, student interests, and school values.
    • Direct rehearsals/class, working with student actors to self-develop short performances.
    • Attend to all aspects of performance preparation, including lighting, sound, costumes, and black box stage management, coordinating with department heads and students.

       
  2. Student Mentorship & Instruction :
    • Teach theater arts classes or workshops focused on acting, directing, script analysis, and other aspects of theater production.
    • Provide mentorship and guidance to students in various theater roles, including acting, directing, stage management, and technical theater.
    • Foster creativity, discipline, and teamwork within the repertory group, promoting a positive learning environment where students can develop their skills.
    • Evaluate student performances, offering constructive feedback and supporting their growth as artists.

       
  3. Collaboration with Faculty & Technical Teams :
    • Work closely with other theater arts faculty, including set designers, costume designers, choreographers, and technical staff, to ensure a cohesive production process.
    • Coordinate with other departments, such as music, dance, or visual arts, to integrate interdisciplinary arts elements into productions as appropriate.
    • Collaborate with school administration to create production schedules, reserve rehearsal spaces, and coordinate performance logistics.

       
  4. Production Logistics & Administration :
    • Oversee the production calendar, ensuring that all rehearsals, technical runs, and performances are properly scheduled and communicated to all involved.
    • Manage the repertory company’s budget, including securing materials, costumes, and technical equipment.
    • Ensure compliance with school policies regarding health, safety, and student conduct during rehearsals and performances.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in theater directing and production, preferably in an educational or repertory setting.
  • Strong knowledge of acting techniques, theater history, and production processes.
  • Experience working with and mentoring high school students.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills to manage multiple aspects of production.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, and technical teams.
  • Strong leadership skills, fostering a positive and creative atmosphere.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in educational theater or working within a specialized arts high school.
  • Background in multiple areas of theater, including acting, directing, set design, or technical theater.
  • Familiarity with diverse theater styles and genres, from classical to contemporary.

Work Environment:

  • The work is primarily performed in the Black Box Theater.
  • Flexible working hours, including evenings and weekends, are required during rehearsal periods and performances.
  • Involvement in school-related extracurricular activities, including community events and outreach, may be necessary.

This is an Independent Contractor position paying $50 to $60 per hour. The Repertory Company meets Tuesday afternoons, approximately 3:00 to 4:15 . Performances are on June 4th and 5th at 6PM with additional rehearsals leading up to the performances.
