MajorDuties
As a Industrial Hygienist you will: Provide expert advice in industrial hygiene for NIOSH with responsibility for developing policy and objectives, coordinating responses to disasters and initiating requirements for the elimination or control of industrial environmental health hazards at their source. Identify gaps in knowledge on how to protect the health and safety of workers impacted by public health threats and support the development of research and other activities to narrow those gaps. Serve as a domestic and international consultant to health professionals, providing advice and technical assistance. As a senior industrial hygienist within NIOSH, participates in the creation and review of NIOSH documents and research publications that evaluate exposure levels and make recommendations for safe working levels for toxic substances for the safeguard of the workers' health. Provides consultation on industrial hygiene evaluation and exposure assessment including the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of workplace hazards. Participates in interdivisional and interagency committees requiring expertise in all aspects of industrial hygiene and related disciplines. Review and make recommendations in the area of emergency preparedness and response on classified information, reports, or briefs on chemical, radiation, and biological terrorism; release of the information could seriously damage national security. Projects set National security and public health and safety policy regarding homeland security including protecting the Nation's critical infrastructure and key resources (CIKR) (i.e., law enforcement, emergency medical services, firefighters, first receivers, and public health professionals). May serve as needed as a liaison to the White House National Security Council and Department of Justice to provide novel and emergent chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives (CBRNE) expertise as it relates to worker protection measures. May require access to CBRNE studies, information, and intelligence that are classified as Secret. Classified information will be accessed through in-person meetings in sensitive compartmented information facilities (SCIFs) and by classified telephone and email systems with the partners listed above. Provide justification for operating budgets and requirements for staff, facilities, and equipment. Evaluate program accomplishments, analyze reports, and determine exposure trends. Initiate surveys of potential health hazards and work processes or operations.

Basic Qualifications: The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH). Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level, which must include the following experience: providing technical information or developing guidance, policy or objectives; responding to or coordinating responses to disasters; and initiating requirements for the elimination or control of environmental health hazards at their source including personal protective equipment.
