Education: Req. paralegal cert, or JD, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least 1 yr of study. Only CO can approve waiver of education requirement.
Job Description:
- Works under Supervisory Paralegal or Project Supervisor.
- Performs tasks while complying w/established procs: compile, prep, & summarize relevant materials for use by attorneys in discovery/in preparation of motions, briefs & other legal docs; summarize depositions/other transcripts; maintain case files; perform simple legal research; index, track/control doc discovery (including docs produced/received in discovery); index, track/exhibit & other materials at depositions/at trial. Preps exhibit cross-references. Assist attorneys in courtroom. Review docs for relevance/privilege according to established guidelines/criteria.
- Other ex. of types of work to be performed include comp. of docs for FOIA, production requests, Congress. inquiries, etc
- Provide legal assistance/tech work requiring specialized knowledge of process, proc, & practice to support legal activities. Support asgmts of this nature involve form, content/issues of legal instruments/docs, & steps/procs involved in processing, storing, & retrieving legal actions/legal info pertaining to activities.
- Provide litigative case management/organize cases for court presentation by preparing/organizing exhibits containing variety of visual material, e.g., statistical charts/photographs.
- Annotate deficiencies in case materials, e.g., missing docs, conflicting statements, & request further investigation by investigative personnel to correct deficiencies
- Serve as contact for assigned cases/provides info/assistance concerning status or relevant procedural issues
- Compile/organize/index discovery/evidence exhibits for trial, witness testimony (as relates to specific criminal charge evidence). Work closely w/assigned attorney(s) to ensure material is efficiently arranged
- Produce/provide to attorney appropriate legal docs, info, exhibits, or witnesses at appropriate time during court proceedings
- Prep/coordinate exhibits for trial; typically involves wide range of visual materials including charts, diagrams, photographs, & models. Depend. on nature/complexity of case, personally prep trial exhibits, or initiate prep by other appropriate staff or contractors to ensure timely production prior to trial date. Maintain accounting systems for materials used as exhibits in grand jury proceedings/trials, prep lists/tables to correlate exhibits w/grand jury transcripts & keep strict account of exhibits used in such proceedings
- Perform variety of admin duties in support of assigned, which involve automation support or other admin subject matter areas
- Using established databases, perform data searches, report design, & other data retrieval asgmts
- Open/maintain/close case files to include receiving newly opened case files/taking necessary measures to notify proper agency of service/to obtain litigation report &/or other needed case info.
- Establish/update DB to track receipt of cases, upcoming deadlines, & other case info. Keep attorneys/appropriate staff members informed of status
- Monitor progress of pend. cases/initiate action to ensure that established deadlines are met.
- Phys. maintain case files/case related material in status within filing system that is accessible/enables easy retrieval
- Close case file in timely manner. Purge unnecessary docs/fwds files to archives
- Prep variety of legal docs, correspond., & other related material from templates including subpoenas, liens, come ups/writs, transmittal of pleadings, status updates to agencies, notices to adverse counsel &/or co-counsel, & submits for review/approval prior to filing/issuance
- Maintain court calendars, schedule court reporters, witnesses, & conferences as required
- Answer outside inquiries not requiring legal interpretations/refers other questions to appropriate office members. Exercise judg. /Discretion in determ. info provided to telephonic inquiries/visitors.
Required Skills:
- At least 1 yr. of litigation paralegal exp required; trial exp very helpful. Automated litigation support exp valued.
- Must have basic legal knowledge, including knowledge of standard legal citation to cite check legal motions/memo & must have sufficient exp w/legal research tools such as LEXIS/Westlaw to perform basic legal research.
- Required excellent written/oral comm. skills, thorough knowledge /hands-on familiarity w/a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review/file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, & hardware sys. Also Required basic familiarity w/Client tools/ knowledge of eDiscovery procs/resources. Abil. to consistently deliver highest qual. work under extreme pressure.
