Field Environmental Coordinator

Wolverine Pipe Line Company is a transportation service company, headquartered in Portage, Michigan and incorporated in 1952. We have over 85 employees in the three states we operate in – Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois. Wolverine operates 700+ miles of active steel pipeline, connecting Chicago refineries to terminals in Michigan and Northwest Indiana and moving product west to east. We transport over 350,000 barrels or 14.7 million gallons of refined products a day. Wolverine also provides approximately 30% of Michigan’s daily refined products supply. We deliver the products that fuel the nation.

Wolverine does not own the product we ship. We are strictly a transport vehicle for our customers, much like UPS or FedEx is for packages. The Federal Government regulates the tariffs Wolverine charges to transport products between origins and destinations.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The role involves collaborating with various departments, agencies and third-parties to ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations in order to uphold the Company’s Core Value of Environmental Protection within the organization and the communities we serve.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Not all inclusive)

  • Identify, interpret, communicate, and maintain requirements for applicable environmental regulations.
  • Provide compliance support to the field sites including analysis of air regulations, applicability determinations, air permit consultation, waste (RCRA) and water.
  • Train and support Operations personnel in the use of tools and site-specific environmental requirements.
  • Update and steward the Waste Management Plan, including providing regulatory interpretations, guidance, and assistance with implementation.
  • Administrate the requirements of the Waste Management Plan including:
  • Storage, disposal, & labeling requirements.
  • Scheduling waste disposal activities at WPLCo facilities.
  • Tracking waste shipments from cradle to grave.
  • Secure and manage funding for environmental projects by routing Authorizations for Expenditure, creating purchase orders, and tracking costs.
  • Participate in field project planning and execution to ensure that all tasks related to environmental review/permitting at the local, state, and federal levels are integrated into project plans and permits are acquired and implemented in the field.
  • Manage historic and current remediation sites to advance toward site closure by working with local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Develop and implement compliance plans to proactively drive compliance and efficiency with a focus on pollution prevention and emissions/waste minimization.
  • Lead the organization toward achieving flawless environmental performance by adhering to regulations and best practices in company-driven projects and routine activities.
  • Maintain and enhance federal, state (IL, IN, MI), and local agency relationships with specific emphasis on environmental review and permitting processes.
  • Perform periodic field walks, informal audits, and field verifications to validate current performance of assigned units.
  • Participate in internal and external regulatory assessments.
  • Ensure compliance with company air permits, SPCC Plans, NESHAP (BBBBBB), SWPPP, or other permits acquired by the company.
  • Steward internal compliance checklists (PL-2369) to ensure environmental compliance on company led projects.
  • Fugitive Emissions Tracking and Compliance Assurance
  • Submit annual environmental compliance reports such as SARA Tier II, RCRA, and MAERS.
  • Review physical and operational changes using systematic methods or best practices to ensure compliance with air, waste, and water regulations, including air permit requirements.
  • Regular attendance

Education, Prior Work Experience and Specialized Skills and Knowledge:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science or related field preferred
  • Five + years of professional environmental services work experience
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Excellent verbal, written, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Thorough understanding of environmental science and understanding of OSHA and EPA regulations
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Requires ability to work independently as well as within a team environment
  • Requires work with both customers, shippers and third-party contractors
