For more information, go to: Description Of Job The Division of Disease Control and Public Health Response exists to ensure that the Department has the ability to effectively monitor, detect, diagnose, prepare for, and nimbly respond to, all types of conditions and events that impact the public’s health.
Work Unit: To monitor, investigate, and control epidemic and communicable diseases affecting the public health in Colorado, as required under Colorado statute, including enteric diseases, invasive bacterial diseases, respiratory diseases, vaccine preventable diseases, zoonotic diseases, foodborne and waterborne diseases, tuberculosis, and healthcare associated infections
The Position: This position exists to participate in active surveillance for invasive bacterial diseases such as Streptococcal diseases, meningococcal diseases, and Haemophilus influenzae; to investigate cases of communicable diseases and medical conditions of public health importance; to analyze and summarize surveillance data; to write reports; to provide information to health care providers and the public on communicable diseases; and to participate in special studies and surveillance projects.
What You Will Be Doing - Participate in active laboratory surveillance under the Emerging Infections Program (EIP) Active Bacterial Core Surveillance (ABCs) primarily for streptococcal pathogens including Group A streptococcus, Group B streptococcus, and Streptococcus pneumoniae by reviewing reported cases and determining if they meet standard case definitions.
- Contribute to chart review and surveillance for other EIP pathogens including meningococcal disease and Haemophilus influenzae.
- Assist ABCs medical chart abstractor with in-depth record reviews at hospitals, ambulatory care clinics, long term care facilities and other healthcare facilities.
- Assist EIP Data Coordinator and EIP Work Lead to determine barriers to isolate submission and work to identify labs outside of EIP catchment; work with labs to determine which methods of submission work best; and perform audits of invasive reportable strep pathogens to ensure complete case reporting.
- Work with internal partners to identify clusters and outbreaks of diseases and monitor for increases in noninvasive disease.
- Identify cases from vulnerable populations.
- Participate in project, program and interdivisional meetings; participating in workgroups and conference calls with other states and federal agencies; and implementing new aspects of these activities.
- Analyze and summarize surveillance data and data from special studies.
- Create and maintain line lists to track clusters and outbreaks.
- Assist the ABCs team in completing data edits from CDC.
- Compile data to measure and report on the program’s activities.
- Provide information on ongoing trends to program, branch, and other partners.
- Describe disease incidence and trends by calculating age, sex, and county-specific rates.
- Tabulate characteristics of cases including vaccination histories, complications, and strain types of causative organisms.
- Prepare ad hoc tabulations of disease incidence per special requests.
- Present data during conferences and meetings so public health partners are aware of disease trends.
- Work on other EIP CDC-funded projects aimed at understanding vaccine preventable and invasive disease epidemiology.
- Duties include managing a database, working with an Institutional Review Board (IRB), conducting case investigations, and completing study subject interviews.
- Participate in the branch’s disease control response to large case investigations and outbreaks that may or may not be directly related to VPID diseases.
- Roles may include conducting case or control interviews, managing a line list, summarizing case data.
- On assigned days, this position participates in the routine epi-call schedule by answering email questions and telephone calls from health care providers, patients, and the public on a variety of communicable diseases issues that may not be directly related to vaccine preventable and invasive diseases but are of public health concern.
- Duties include providing consultation on diagnosis, recommending laboratory testing, treatment, prophylaxis, control measures, and prevention strategies; and triaging complex calls to the attention of the subject matter expert.

Experience Five (5) years of professional experience in Communicable Disease Control or Communicable Disease Surveillance, Communicable Disease Epidemiology or an occupation related to the work assigned to this position.
OR Education and Experience: A combination of related education in public health or Communicable Disease Control, Communicable Disease Surveillance, Communicable Disease Epidemiology or in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to Five (5) years.

- Travel for meetings, conference, disease response or medical record reviews and some out of state and over night stays.
- Be expected to work and/or remain at their worksite in delayed start, early release, or closure situations.
- Be available in the event of an emergency, (e.g., bio-terrorist attack, chemical attack, disease outbreak or all hazards) and be required to report to work immediately at the regular or alternate location. During this time, travel restrictions may be in place.
- Be available in the event of the activation of the Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) and be required to report to work immediately at the regular or alternate location. During this time, travel restrictions may be in place.
Preferred Qualifications - Relevant state of Colorado work experience
- Ability to form and maintain positive relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders
- Cultural sensitivity and the ability to build rapport with diverse individuals in multicultural settings.
- Experience with public health, data analysis and reporting
- Experience conducting case interviews and medical records.
- Experience in Communicable Disease Surveillance and Outbreak Response.
- Experience working at and/or with local public health agencies
- Specialized experience working with invasive or vaccine preventable diseases
